To register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) in the UK, internationally trained nurses and midwives must meet several requirements. These include having an appropriate nursing/midwifery qualification, passing an English language proficiency test (either IELTS or OET), passing the Computer Based Test – NMC Test of Competence (Part 1), providing relevant documents (including a police clearance, tuberculosis test, and proof of registration progress from the NMC UK online portal), having at least one year of nursing/midwifery experience and a valid passport, and submitting a cover letter/personal statement.

New Zealand Requirement for FENs.

Internationally trained nurses seeking registration in New Zealand should submit their documents and credentials to CGFNS for verification and receive a report. Once received, the report must be requested to be sent to the Nursing Council of New Zealand. After that, an assessment will be made based on seven registration standards: Identity, English Language, Nursing Registration, Nursing Qualification, Post-Registration Experience, Fitness to Practice, and Competence to Practice. Nurses must be able to demonstrate their ability to meet these standards and are required to complete a Competency Assessment Programme, which can last between six to twelve weeks.

After meeting these standards, the Nursing Council will complete the registration process and invite nurses to apply for a practicing certificate, allowing them to legally practice in New Zealand.

As a minimum requirement, applicants must be of good character, possess a valid certificate to practice issued by a recognized certifying body, and have completed the minimum number of years of nursing training. Applications are processed all year round, and successful applicants will be notified if they are eligible to sit for the Licensing Examination to be held next year. After assessment of the applicant’s qualifications, the Nursing Council will issue a letter outlining the next phase of the registration which is to undertake the examination. Successful completion of both practical and theoretical examinations will allow applicants to apply for a practising certificate which is renewable every three years. If you’re a nurse or midwife from another country who wants to work in Australia, you must register with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) and may also need an Australian visa. Before applying for registration, you need to complete a self-check to determine your qualification assessment criteria.

Based on these criteria, you’ll be assigned to a stream with different assessment stages. All IQNMs seeking to work in Australia must complete two orientation parts. Orientation Part 1 is an online course that introduces Australia and its healthcare context. Part 2 must be completed after registration.

Candidates must complete Orientation Part 1 within 90 days of creating their account after completing the self-check. To succeed in the IQNM assessment process and be eligible to apply for registration, you must provide additional personal and contact information, identification and qualification documentation, and pay the IQNM assessment fee.
