Essential requirements for internationally trained/ foreign-trained/ overseas nurses and midwives intending to register with Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), UK
a. Nursing/Midwifery qualification
You are required to have an appropriate nursing and midwifery qualification (either diploma or degree/ baccalaureate).
b. Pass an English Language proficiency (where applicable)
The NMC UK accepts either International English Language Test System (IELTS) Academic or the Occupational English Test (OET) as evidence of English language proficiency.
International English Language Test System (IELTS)
NMC UK accepts IELTS Academic examination certificate confirming your achievement of:
- an overall score of at least 7, and
- at least 6.5 in the writing section and at least 7 in the reading, listening and speaking modules.
Both the paper-based and computer-based IELTS Academic tests delivered at a test centre are accepted by NMC UK.
Occupational English Test (OET)
The NMC UK accepts OET examination certificate confirming your achievement of:
- at least a grade C+ in the writing section, and
- at least a grade B in the reading, listening and speaking sections.
UK NMC accepts the OET on Paper, OET on Computer and the OET@Home.
c. Pass the Computer Based Test (CBT) – NMC Test of Competence (Part 1)
This is a mandatory requirement to register with NMC UK, and therefore candidates intending to apply for job overseas should have at least passed the part 1 of the test of competence or should have at least booked the exams before contacting us for support.
d. Relevant documents
You will also need to send to us the following documents to aid in processing your application;
- Valid Passport
- Up-to-date curriculum vitae (VC)
- Police Clearance: A police clearance is required for every country in which you have lived for more than 12 months in the last 10 years.
- Tuberculosis test
- Minimum of one year nursing or midwifery experience
- Proof of registration progress from the NMC UK online portal (if possible)
- Cover letter/personal statement
e. Job applications as well as preparing for and passing an interview

f. Issuance of your job offer letter and Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS)
Upon successful application and job offer, your employer, who will also be your sponsor in the UK will issue you job offer letter which spells out all the terms and conditions of the job. Also, a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS), which is part of the documents needed to apply for skilled worker visa in your home country, will be issued to you.
g. Visa application and preparation to migrate to work in the UK

h. Pass the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) – NMC Test of Competence (Part 2)
Upon arrival in the UK, your employer will provide you with the necessary support, training, and booking/payment for the part 2 of the NMC Test of Competence, which is the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE). The purpose of this exam is to test your knowledge and clinical skills as well as to get you to familiarize yourself with some of the real-life scenarios you are likely to encounter in your day-to-day life as a registered nurse or midwife in UK. After passing your OSCE, you will receive your NMC UK personal identification number (PIN), making you a fully registered nurse or midwife in the UK.
